I am Filipino American! Dont degrade Filipinos, there are more educated Filipinos since we value education alot. Most people are not just contented with a high school diploma! It is everybody's dream to have a college diploma.
Domestic helpers go to Hongkong to give their children the best education. I had talked to some of them 2 weeks ago! They had stayed there for 9-15 years just to give their children the best education . I know somebody who is a domestic helper in London whose child here in the Philippines is a doctor and have lots of apartments.
Most Filipinos commute riding a jeepney, bus or metrorail trains such as the LRT and MRT. If you wear shorts while riding those means of transportation people will think that you are too cheap. Prostitutes are the ones who wear improper attires in public. SHORTS are usually worn in the beach and during sports events.
The Filipinos are highly conservative ! Most people are Catholic and mostly fear GOD. They dont abort their babies, only a very small percentage! Unlike abroad where they always think of abortion.
Be sure that when you degrade us, you have the right grammar!
where = wear
wheater = weather
eveyone= everyone

When people here in the Philippines go out of their house, they usually plan the places they would go to during the day. In most of those places, wearing shorts would be inappropriate. That is the custom here, wearing clothes appropriate to the places they go to and to the people they are meeting during the day.
Shorts are usually worn on the beach or when playing, going to the gym or doing sports. Other than these situations, wearing shorts would be considered a sign of disrespect.
Cute Filipinas will certainly look at you when wearing short shorts to the mall, as they will immediately know you are not from here, for certain, a tourist not used to the warm climate. And looking at you would not necessarily mean interest, it could just be curiousity, because boxer shorts have long been out of fashion here. The cool young men out here wear shorts just below their knees these days. Most of the young pinoys are fashion conscious, you know.

Geeeeeeeezzzzzusss! Do you know what you are talking about? & Don't you have a common sense? It's not a burning hell in the Phils. you know. That's why people can still manage to wear jeans especially for formal get ups. Shorts are mostly used on summer time or to those not so formal places. The best way to approach people especially Filipinas is to be polite & speak slowly so they will understand you especially if you're speaking a bit slang. Then don't be such a braggart when talking to them or else nobody will ever dare to talk to you. Good luck!

hi. i'm from the philippines and the reason (well, for me, that is) why i would rather wear jeans than shorts even if it's really hot is because it's much more formal to wear outside. plus, most of the nicer establishments have a strict "no-shorts" policy like the hotels, fine dining restaurants and shopping malls. people usually wear shorts if it's an informal setting, like going on a fast food restaurant, or going to the beach or just staying at home.
the best way to approach filipinas, just be nice, dont be too arrogant or talk english with a "slang" so much or people will just ignore you or think you're "trying hard".
and for your "their noses starts to bleed" comment, it depends which types of filipinos you speak to. most filipinos speak english fine and can understand you. you might even be surprised that even "tambays" or the "streetkids" can speak english.
oh, and ive noticed, the best way to strike up a conversation with us, is usually to say something in the local dialect and the ice will be broken ;)

1. It's pretty much a casual wear for us Filipinos, that is, whever we leave our homes. How we look at home stays at home. How we look in public is different.
2. You can try learning our language, Tagalog. That way, you won't have to worry about SOME of our Filipinas having a hard time talking with you.

People in the Philippines are modest. You don't see many
of them wearing shorts in the big cities, just as you don't
see many of them wearing a two piece bathing outfit.
When you visit a foreign land, you should try your best to
adapt to their way of life. So many foreigners visit a country
and try to impose their culture on the locals. I believe that
is one reason why foreigners have trouble in other countries.
Respect the way filipinos do things, the way they dress, etc..
and maybe when you meet girls there, they will respect you.

filipinos are a conservative people. we think that wearing shorts is only appropriate when going to the beach of the market. We do wear pants at work, when going to Church (we even have to wear shoes when we do hear mass), when we go to the mall, and wherever we go... but, today, that is not the case... a lot has changed. may filipinos are embracing the use of shorts in public...even slippers. thanks to the increasing popularity of the thong slippers from brazil... yes... they have not just been a fashion symbol, but a status symbol as well...

wow, i visited last year and wore shorts almost all the time, and now i feel like a dork for doing that based on all these responses. how come nobody told me that in the first place, oh well. great country next time i go i'll wear pants except to the beach or on a boat. :)
no wonder they did not let me into the one Bank tower that i wanted to visit for business matters. i just thought they were being rude. You live and learn. and i guess they are used to the heat so thats my answer for the why pants instead of shorts.

They are used to the weather. I live in Southern California, I wear shorts in the 60's. They would be wearing coats and scarfs. I was told repeatedly, if you want t nice girl in Asia you have to wear long slacks and a shirt. You dress like a tourist you will be treated like a tourist and not treated very seriously. I would prefer to wear shorts too. I did when i was with my girlfriend in Bangkok. Now that we have broken up, I have to revert my wardrobe for the next trip. If you want one that is going for your money then wear shorts. Otherwise, best to dress to impress. The Filipinas are like that. I have worked with filipinas in US and are good friends with many still.
Good luck and have a good time there.

Short pants are truly an American phenomenon. We are really one of the only counties that view short pants as acceptable to wear out and about. Most European, Asian, South American countries among others just don't wear them like we do. Most countries think that they are inappropriate unless you are at the beach or on holiday. We have to remember that just because we do it doesn't mean that the rest of the world does.
