Dial Up? They ALWAYS disconnect themselves after a short period of inactivity-- OR NOT! They just disconnect whenever!

OT, but isn't it very frustrating with dial up nowadays?

In case you're ever tempted to upgrade, just a FYI.

I just switched from Cable to DSL a few days ago & could KICK myself for not having done it sooner.

I am VERY impressed with DSL! Cheaper & JUST as fast as cable! I got a package thru Embarq for like, $90/mo. that covers my phone service, my DSL & Dish satellite service (top 100 channels---not crazy about the channels, but I can upgrade if I want).

call waiting may be not disabled, usually *70 will disable it, if you want to keep it so you are able to receive incoming calls, don't add this to the dial string;

or, you probably once upon a time got a tiny little dialogue box saying something like "disconnecting after 20 minutes, Click here to not disconnect in idle..." if that does not pop up anymore, I would go and delete that dial-up connection, (but not before noting the phone #, and dial up on that new connection, and wait for that disconnect pop-up to come up again. In my experience, it does not happen the first time it disconnects, so give it a couple of times to happen;

or, you can go to google and search for "internet dialing software" and find alternative dials that will do more than the Microsoft dial provides

Check your dialup properties (Control Panel > Network Connections > right click [name of your connection] > Properties).

Look for Options tab. Change the option in "Idle time before hanging up" to 24 hours. This will ensure you connection on, unless it's been idle for 24 hours.

It's likely that your ISP is dropping the connection for inactivity. There's an easy way to get around that, though. Just set your e-mail client to check for new mail every 5 minutes and then leave it running all the time.

get a program that will ping your server constantly so that it fools it into thinking you are actually doing something.
