They tried banning alcohol once. It didn't work.
As for banning something, that isn't always the answer. For example: meth is illegal, yet people continue to use it. Cocaine is illegal, yet people continue to use it. Marijuana is illegal, yet people continue to use it.
So if they prove that sugar causes cancer, does that mean we outlaw sugar?
Sorry, won't work.

If you outlawed smoking there would be an epidemic of healthy americans and old people who live to see their 90's! That can't be good for either tobacco companies or healthcare providers!
Drinking on the other hand can be quite healthy in moderation, and unfortunately, you can't legislate people into not being stupid. Prohibition didn't work and dumb people will find some way, whether beer or spray paint, to get wasted no matter what.

The US government makes more money on liquor and tobacco than they care to toss out in favor of our health.
They do not make any money on marijuana, heroin or crack - that's why it's illegal.
If they cornered the market on those drugs (and didn't make more money on them being illegal) then things would change.
The "war on drugs" started by the Reagan administration was really just a campaign to give more money to the authoritarian aspect of American Government.
Now police have fewer restrictions on what they are allowed to "discover" when searching for drug offenders. It would shock most Americans to find out just how much money the government makes on selling off the property that is confiscated from people who are charged with drug offenses. They take cars, inheritance, houses, family heirlooms, rare paintings and jewelry, government secrets etc. etc.
So they make more money on some drugs being illegal while others are kept taxable...
Any drug addict can tell you that it is harder to quit smoking than it is to quit heroin.

They tried to make alcohol illegal once...remember Prohibition? That was disasterous. The reason they don't make it illegal is because the government obtains WAY too much money off the taxes of cigarettes and alcohol.

While it should be illegal, and does cause problems: prohibition caused a worse problem. It didn't end drinking, just drove it underground and made it worse. Let's face it, smoking and drinking are here to stay in America, I toast to it!
