I am 40 weeks now, just wondering if its urine, discharge or is it common to leak small amounts of amniotic fluid in this late stage? Anyone have similar experiences? Thank you in advance.

Urine smells like urine, amnio fluid smells slightly sweetish, like hay. Another way to tell at home is to urinate, lie down immediately then get up about a half hour later. If it still trickles then most likely amnio fluid. Otherwise you can go to your doc or the hospital and they will run a paper strip across your vagina if it turns a certain color then it's amnio fluid. If you can't tell at home go get tested, as once your water breaks you are at risk of infection. Take a shower (no tub bath or sex) until you find out what's going on. Amniotic fluid does not keep fluid OUT of your uterus, the mucus plug and bag of water keeps INFECTIONS and such out. Also, there is no such thing as a "dry" labor (you BLEED during labor and birth so how could it be DRY anyway), and your water breaking beforehand does NOT signal a more difficult birth. Otherwise doctors would NOT break your water as a first step during an induction. (I noticed that some people told you these things, that's why I'm making it clear).

odds are, you're leaking amniotic fluid. you really should call your doc. when that starts they want you in the hospital within 24 hrs due to risk of infection. i leaked with my first two. when in doubt, have it checked out. i waited 11 hrs the first time and my doc was a little ticked off.

Yes, it is common for your water to break, and to have a "slow leak"...it could lead to a more difficult birth (lack of lubrication) or an infection though, so make sure your doctor is aware of the situation...good luck and take care!

You've probably ruptured your membrane. It's important to tell your OB this because he/she needs to make sure there is sufficient fluid for the baby not to get an infection.

i would say a little of everthing! especially amniotic fluid especially if you (most likely you have) lost your mucus plug.(keeps fluids out of the uterus) it could also be the very beginning of your labor! congrats and goodluck!!
