I think it is a good move. He won't start at first ahead of Casey and if Casey gets hurt, it just takes one call to bring Shelton back up. He's also never going to be a DH (Shefield, Thames, Monroe) so why not send him to Triple-A for more playing time and development? It's not like he got sent to Single-A.

They just don't have room for the red-headed step child anymore! They have too much talent in the right places (or wrong places from Shelton's point of view!) When they traded for Sheff it sealed Shelton's fate. They love Casey at first, and Sheff will be the primary DH now. Unless the trade Thames, I see VERY few at bats for Chris this year in DET. the best thing for all involved would be a trade. The Tigers have depth, and they could probably get a team to give them a decent return based on the way Shelton performed at the beginning of last year... based on that strtch when he was on fire, a team may wanna give him a shot! He should go to the Rays or the A's to platoon w/ Dan Johnson.

No. The Tigers don't have a backup 1st baseman right now and are carrying a LOT of dead weight with both Neifi Perez and Omar Infante as backup utility infielders. Also, despite his post April slump, Chris Shelton still had better overall numbers than Sean Casey for the season. I'm baffled by the decision to keep 2 utility infielders, neither one of which have stolen base potential. For some reason Leyland loves Neifi Perez, a player past his prime playing days with no speed, no bat, and in my opinion, only average fielding skills. Must be the Tigers don't want to eat that entire 2.5 million dollars they are paying Perez this season. Don't be surprised to see Shelton back in the majors by June.

Smart move? Yes, I think so. The Tigers always have had a lot of 1B/DH type players.
There's nobody who can beat out Sean Casey for defense or batting average, not to mention his presence in the clubhouse.

Definitely! You wouldn't want a repeat of what happened last year, would ya? Yeah, I mean he was hot like, the first 20 games, but afterwards his bat went to crap. The organization's gotta make sure he can develop that consistency before they can even THINK of bringing him back up...
