I have looked into this as best as i can and the guy behind the music and the songs is called Lester Barnes. He wrote the theme and songs but i do not know if he is also the singer.
Hope someone can help you more if need be.

This is the website of the author of the books the series is based upon and I am sure she will know who sings it!
I hope this helps, even if it does not then at least it may give you an idea of some nice books to get your son for his next birthday!
UPDATE - I just found this site http://www.lesterbarnes.com/ it is the site of the composer of the theme tune. He will certainly know who sings it!
