No idea - the concept is just so foreign to me. Recently, in a city not far from where I live, the mom left a one year old and a three year old in an SUV with the car running. The one year old somehow got out of her car seat and stepped on the electric window button. Window went down, and then went up - with her head squished to it. So she then laid down on the seat. The older kid fell asleep. When the mom got back to the vehicle, she thought the baby was sleeping, put her in the carseat, and continued driving on her merry way. So sad and so bizarre.
Somehow, I really don't know how or why, a mom or dad thinks they can run into a store or something for "just a minute". Anything can happen in a minute, and it is NEVER just a minute. It's pure laziness. YES, it's hard to wake up a sleeping baby and schlep her into the grocery store. YES, it's a pain to get three or four kids in and out of car seats.
But you are a parent; it's your job.

I agree. I would never in a million years leave my children alone in a running car. The only way I will ever leave them in the car is if their father is with them. You can never be too safe these days.
My husband recently encountered a customer who left her 5-month old baby sleeping in a non-running car at night in the middle of winter (a customer spotted her and reported it to the store right away). The car was parked in the parking lot, so who knows how long she intended to leave her there while she did some grocery shopping. Plus, our winters here are extremely cold, so I have no idea how that poor child didn't freeze to death. Needless to say, he paged the store with the make and model of the car, plus the license plate number trying to get this woman to wake up. She took about 5 minutes to show up after numerous pages. Then, she shrugged it off saying "she's fine", and walked away to continue her shopping. So my husband took it upon himself to call the police on her. I seriously hope that they took that child away from her. I honestly don't know how some people are allowed to have children.
Another woman in my city left her two young children in her running car recently. The 2-year old girl started playing with the power windows, resulting in her getting her head stuck...which unfortunately ended up killing her. If that doesn't make you wake up, I don't know what will.

I have never left my kids in the car, running or not running. I have 4 kids ages 9,6,4,&2
If I need to run in to the store or even in to pay for gas my kids go with me.
I worked at a gas station years ago, I have seen so many little kids locked in the car in all kinds of weather, parents thinking they have their keys or can have their child unlock it. I have also seen a child knock a running car in to gear and backed in to a very busy road, the car was the struck by a semi, before we (myself and the manager) could get outside. Where was dad? He was in the restroom. The little boy was hurt but not to bad, luckly the semi was only doing about 35 mph when he hit the car. The dad was mad he pretty, rebuilt mustang was a complete mess. The dad actually spanked the little boy for wrecking the car right in front of the police and ems workers.
No one every stops and thinks that it could be possible, or thinks they have taught their children what to do, or what not to do. But with all the car theives, child molesters/abductors, of freak accidents, you can never be 100% sure that your child is going to be safe in a car running or not, for even 20 to 30 seconds even if you have on-star.
Is your child's life really worth it?

Absolutely not!! In fact I would and have called the cops on anyone who did this. A couple years ago I came out of the grocery store and there was a running car parked in the fire zone with the doors locked and windows up and there was a sleeping infant inside. I called the police and another woman and I waited while the police came. The mother was out before the police, she was probably 18 or 19, and we told her the police were on their way and she just bawled but no one felt sorry for her. What idiot would do that??

Leaving a child in the car while it's running is a mistake. However, depending on the age of the child, I have left both of my kids in the car when I've run into a convenient store but my engine is always shut off. my kids are 12 and 9 years old.

I see it done all the time. And I call the police, all the time. I work in a small shop located in a strip mall. Mothers pull in with their mini-vans and SUVs and town cars, and do just what you describe. They go into the cleaners or the paint store or the sub shop or even into our shop. I call the police, and/or my co-worker (a retired cop) goes and chews the mother out. These people are just everyday people, who do stupid unthinking actions. They think it would NEVER happen to them, not in THIS neighborhood!
Think again.

Absolutely not. Never in a million years would I ever leave my child in the car alone.. whether it's running or not, isn't the issue. The issue is reponsible parenting and safety.

My kids are 14 and 15 now, so I don't worry about it. But yeah little kids - that's just stupid.
My wife left our son in the car (strapped into his car seat) while she talked with someone. Son got out, came up front, put it in reverse and the car rolled about 300 feet back onto someone's lawn. Real stupid.

They only times I would leave my children in the car, if I forgot something inside my house and I run inside to get it. And if I run inside my husband's shop to give him something for a split second. I always have the windows cracked, and I take the keys with me. I probably leave them in the car for a total of 20 to 30 seconds. Plus I only do it because my car has onstar, and a passive alarm. Only a certified lincoln key just like mines can start the car. The car will not start unless my key is in it, even if you try to hotwire it..More parents should get the club.

I have a 2 year old, the only way I will leave her in the car is if her dad is with her, or one of the 2 dogs(Rottweiler and mastiff)but with the animals would never leave the car running, what would happen if they put it in gear(accidentally)?could get ran over too, there are a lot more evils to think about rather than just being kidnapped or grand theft.( i like the idea of the dog, anyone dumb enough to jump in the car with one of them and my daughter deserves what they get)
