I am 16 weeks and I am high risk due to some medication I am on. I was so worried about having a miscarriage before the 12 week mark and I know that the chances dramatically reduce after that but I am just curious to know why some still lose the baby after the first trimester. It's such sad news to hear and I just tend to worry being this is my first baby.....thanks for your comments.

It can occur because the placenta detaches from the uterin wall. Blood clots can form and the child dies (this is most likely how my son died.. he was born still on Nov 9th, 2006).

Other reasons include a fall- a sudden drop in pregnancy hormones, problems with the fetus (genetic abnormalities).

I had no idea how common it is to lose a child in the second or third trimester until it happened to me. It's like this horrible secret women are hiding.

I wish you the best with your pregnancy!

A miscarriage is defined by using fact the spontaneous loss of a being pregnant earlier to 24 weeks. After that it particularly is defined as a stillbirth. maximum miscarriages do happen in the previous 12 weeks, that's why maximum women folk choose for to no longer share the information of their being pregnant until they attain this point.

I had a close friend lose 2 baby boys at 19-20 weeks. It was due to a specific genetic defect - Trisomy 19 (I think it was 19? There are different numbers, which signify the chromosome being affected). It was heartbreaking. Curiously enough, she became pregnant shortly thereafter with a girl, who is wonderfully healthy at 3 years of age and going strong. :) Not sure if the genetic problem that they had affected boys more than girls, or if it was just coincidence that it worked out that way for her?

Don't stress yourself out though - the odds are in your favor. Yes, things can happen at any point in a pregnancy, but most of the time it is due to situations beyond your control and therefore it does no good to worry yourself sick over them! Good luck, and enjoy your pregnancy. :)

I have a friend who lost their baby at 20 weeks.
My twins died at 10 weeks, and I miscarried at 12 weeks.

It usually has to do with a major defect, which has little to do with anything you have done.

Miscarriage is just about as common as birth, and every miscarriage is different.

miscarriage early on is usually unknown and just happens, later miscarriages usually are due to complications such as incompitant cervix (as i have) there are many things that can be harmful to your pregnancy but as long as you take care of yourself and keep yout doctor informed at all times, you will be just fine.
congrats and good luck
