Hey before you go to a garage check under the bonnet & you'll see a small container with a screw cap..that's the power steering fluid.check that! ; ) that worring/winning sound happens when it's low on fluid!
The worst it could be is the gear box..hopefully not this but maybe a wheel bearing. Good Luck!

if its a screech from a wheel its a bearing, nothing to major to fix. if its an old mondeo and its coming from under the bonnet could be your auxiliary belt slipping under the extra load, this controls your power steering water pump etc.
Without some more info it could be anything really,

either your wheels are catching somewhere, but that would be on full lock.
otherwise i would suggest a wheel bearing although this would create a noise that would gradually get loader as time went on and wouldnt just appear?
would suggest a gearbox or propshaft fault but i would have thought this would have made noise regardless of turning or not.
gut feeling says wheel bearings.

Check the rubber gaiters on your cv joints. If they are torn they can let dirt get in and mess up the works, either the joint or the wheel bearings. Could also be your power steering pump is complaining it hasn't got enough oil.
