I have no info on the mother board so i don,t know if 1gig would be compatable up grade from 400 meg,mach. is HP pavillion w/ XP-sp-2 was not orig. o/s 98 was. Is this going to be more expensive than buying a new mach.?

At 400Mhz, it's most likely a Pentium III CPU so you'll have to buy (aty least) another motherboard to upgrade into the Ghz range.

You will need a new mother board.Go Dxdiag in run, and itll tell you there.1Ghz processor is pointless.Try internet, komplett is a good source, A motherboard and processor for maybe 300 or so...?

Buy a new one. Just putting in a new processor might not work anyway. Lots of chances to screw up your machine.
