am seeking to rent small apt. w/ bathroom, kitchette, within $300-$400 range, seems there is not much to be found at this range.

Northwest Ohio you can get a two to three bedroom apartment or home, with in that price range.
One bedroom often are around $250 or less.

Ha!!! well here in New York City going rate is $1200.00 for a closet.

it might help if you tell us where you are live...
in New York city you can not get a cardboard box for that much, but in boise idaho you may get a nice one bedroom....
