No, they shouldn't. My family came over in the 1920's so I have nothing to apologize about. Nor should the USA. It was over 140 years ago! Anyone still alive to apologize to that lived as a slave? NO!

What do you mean by "apologize"? The best apology Americans can offer is equality to every person, no matter what their color, race, creed, or nationality. It is the continuing attempt to grow and learn from the mistakes of the past that speak the loudest, mean the most, and last the longest. What is the use of some speech, when the KKK, the Aryan Nation, and the Neo-nazis are still advocating the idea that black people are less worthy, less human, and have less rights than whites? Where did those ideas come from, if not from the tradition of slavery?
We cannot change the hearts of everyone, but we can change our own hearts. Actions speak louder than words. When you treat a person of another color just as you would treat a person of your own color, you have made more of an apology than any words could convey. When you stand up against racism, when you defend black people from injustice, and when you cry just as hard when a black child dies from violence as you would when a white child dies, THEN you can say that it is truly over.
Do you have any idea how many people died so that slavery would NOT be abolished? The people who fought to keep slavery may have lost the war, but they passed to their descendants the same mentality that drove them to fight to keep slaves. It is only within the last 45 years that black people have been able to enjoy any real freedom equal to that of white people, since the civil rights movement of the 60's. That is only 2 generations. There are still many places in the United States that black people are not treated equally, not welcomed, and not respected as citizens and equal humans. How then, is it over?

Sure, right after Spain, Portugal, Arabian countries, Iran, India, France, Holland, and Denmark. The Romans owe a pretty big apology too. (All countries involved in slavery and slave trade).
Personally, my ancestors either weren't Americans at the time or were Native Americans. Plus slavery never really existed in my state, so a national apology would make me a little uncomfortable.
The bottom line is I think we can all agree slavery is and was wrong and if we work to get rid of it everywhere in the world forever it would be worth more than an apology.

Since I don't feel like writing a new answer, I copied this from another slavery question I answered today:
Would you people stop bringing up slavery? My goodness, for the most part everyone on this site bringing up slavery has been white, not black yet some of you enjoy saying "oh well blacks make such a big deal about slavery, lets send them back to africa". A lot of us are OVER slavery, so why don't you guys get over it too. Geez.
Sorry if that response seems mean, but I'm just really sick of hearing people who aren't black talk about slavery and then try to say it's blacks who are complaining. It's getting annoying. Even blacks who complain about slavery need to get over it, because it's all in the past so everyone needs to just move on.
