If I remember right, doctors are hesitant to induce if a woman is not at least 50% effaced and 3cm dilated. It just makes it so much harder on the woman if they try to do it before that. Sex helps because semen contains prostaglandins which soften the cervix and having an orgasm causes contractions, which also help to soften and dilate.
You can also walk as much as possible, which releases oxytocin. Also, even though the doctor you saw yesterday sounds like an ***, don't let him stress you. Stress can keep labor from progressing (and all the steps that lead up to it) just like it stops a period from coming. Talk to your baby. I know it sounds crazy, but the baby controls a lot of this process. Encourage your baby, let him or her know it's time. Visualize your baby descending into the birth canal and just RELAX. Lots of midwives (mine included) swear by this method.
Good luck and I hope this helps!

The criteria to find out whether or not your induction will most likely be successful ( and not end in a C-Section) can be found by the Bishop's score, type in a searchfor it. This will give you a "score" based on your percentage of effacement, your dilation in cm., the babys station (where it is at in your pelvis) and so on. This is very informative to know...and just curious but why are you being induced at 38 weeks? Barring any medical complications you shouldn't let them do it. My docs never induce until 10-12 days over, and even then only if ripe for it.

If your cervix is not ready they have a gel they can put in there that softens the cervix, all three of my kids had to be induced due to blood pressure. My cervix was never ready when I went in but after the gel and the IV my longest labor was 4 hours. Good Luck

I've not heard of anything, except stripping membranes, which the doctor has to do. I'm sorry the doctor was rude, but he was very right in saying that you want your cervix to be ready. Otherwise, when they induce, they will have to get you ready medically and it hurts very badly, most of the time. So hang in there and wait till you are ready.

Your body knows what to do. How can you tell for sure that the due date they gave you is even correct. Yes they are pretty good about pinpointing it now days, but you never know. It could be off 2 or three weeks. When they induce you they'll hook you up to an Ive and you'll start to have contractions. Nothing complicated.

I was induced and I was in the stage you are in now. They just added an extra step by inserting a suppository that helped my cervix to dilate before they started the pitocin.

Sex is actually the best way to help ripen a cervix...Semen contains prostaglandins which help ripen the cervix and prepare for labor

There is no reason to be induced. Your child is not ready to come out. Don't be selfish- let your child mature in your womb.
I don't understand why so many people are willing to risk health problems, a difficult labor and complications from an induction rather then wait ONE MORE WEEK and delivery naturally.
