I just read something that mentioned that the Romanians have based their legal system partly on that of the French Fifth Republic. I didn't know they'd run through so many government changes! How many times has France gone from Monarchy to Republic and back again?

The French have had 5 different Republics indeed. This mainly means five changes of Constitution under a republican regime.

This is how it went:
- 1st Republic from 1792 to 1799 when Napoleon seized power, first as 'Consul' then as Emperor (giving birth to the 1st Empire). Fall of Empire was followed by a return to Monarchy.

- 2nd Republic: From 1848 to 1851 when Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte, nephew of the Emperor, made a coup d'état and got himself crowned Emperor under the name Napoleon the 3rd (the 2nd was Napoleon's son, also known as the King of Rome but he never reigned).

- 3rd Republic: from 1875 to 1940. The longest French Republic so far ended with surrender to the Germans and instauration of the Vichy Regime.

- 4th Republic from 1946 to 1958.

- 5th Republic from 1958 till now.

At least 2 candidates to the forthcoming presidential election (France will have a new president on the 6th of May), socialist Segolene Royal and centre-right candidate Francois Bayrou, have expressed their wish to go towards a 6th Republic in the last month. Funnily enough, it is Jean-Marie Le Pen who has been talking about that for a long, long time now...

Hope this helps...

Think the French are at about Republic number six by now.

The Chinese leader, Chairman Mao Tse Tung was once asked what he thought of the French Revolution, to which he replied, "It's too early to say."

The last revolution in Paris was the 1960-s student led uprising. It was put down by Charles de Gaulle. The Sorbonne now has only one entrance in and out which can be locked shut with ease. No more students making a nuisance of themselves.
