Sectarian violence or sectarian strife is violence inspired by sectarianism, that is, between different sects of one particular mode of thought, not necessarily religious (e.g. conflicts between the nationalists and communists in China in the early 19th century are largely constructed by Chinese nationals of the time as sectarian). Some of the possible inputs for sectarian violence include power struggles, political climate, social climate, cultural climate, and economic landscape.

Yes, people are right when they point out that it is two different groups fighting. But sects are not always Muslim.

A sect is a belief within a larger belief. Like Sunni and Shi'ite are two sects of Islam. Or Protestant and Catholic are two sects of Christianity, who fought in Ireland.

I would not recommend watching ONLY fox news for your world events or political knowledge, it doesn't actually teach you much, the world is a lot bigger and more interesting than they care to show. And violence occurs everywhere, not only in the Middle East and not only between Muslims.

Hi! A sect is a group which has split off from another group, because of differing philosophies; for example: There are those who believe Muhammed was a divine being, and only his descendants should lead Islam: There are those who believe Muhammed was a divine man, nevertheless, a man: therefore, anyone qualified should be able to be leader. These sects are called Sunni and Shiite. Hope this helps!

Violence caused by two groups. In the case of Iraq, the groups or 'sects' are Shia and the Sunni. They hate each other over a division that occurred in Islam shortly after their prophet died and they were trying to figure out who would be his successor.

It means fighting/terrorism between people groups based on their beliefs or ethnicity. The term is often used in the news to describe violent fighting between different "types" or sects of Muslims. Such as Shiite Muslims vs. Sunnis or Kurds
