The Nat's really don't have a lot of money and that was the best offer Belliard was getting from any team so he took it.
It really doesn't matter much considering Felipe López will get most if not all the playing time a second.

Besides the obvious fat, thug and defense factors, I suggest you check your stats. Kennedy's #,s are better.
Ronnie B. is a career .272 hitter, steals less than 5 bases / yr.
Averages 120 games, less than 9 HR's, about 55 RBI's. with a terrible .330 OBP
Adam K. is a career .281.hitter, gets 10-12 steals / yr. plays 150 games, and about 55 RBI's but only6-7 HR's and a
.400+ OBP
The Cardinals needed a top-of-the-order hitter, ideally a left-handed, that doesn't strike out to get on base and/or advance runners (from 1st to 3rd occures twice as often with a left-handed hitter) in front of Pujols. Belliard fits NONE of those.
Brsides Eckstein and Kennedy played many yrs. together, won a world series together, led the AL in dbl. plays, more that once, together, and adam K is regarded as one of the top fielding 2nd basemen in MLB.
Don't you think there is a reason why nobody else wanted him.
Oh, and to the answerer several before me, I'm quite certain that Ronnie has a W.S. Ring as well. And I'm pretty sure it's alot newer.

I don't think the Cards wanted him back. I am pretty sure he has gained a bad reputation for his work ethic or lack thereof, even while in CLE still. That's what I have heard, it may not be totally true though.
BTW, if you are a Cards fan, you are going to fall in love with the Dp combo of Eck and Kennedy, trust me!

To stay in their system, to work his way up, Adam Kennedy has more experience, and a World Series ring. Belliard isn't leaving their team, just waiting his turn.
