Why is the spit at Dawlish Warren being protected, why don't they just let it wash away? If so how is it being protected?

because it is a valuable area for wildlife and birds
in older time, the area would erode naturally and the wildlife would move on, as best it could, to other areas

Now, there is so much development of every spare bit of land, there is no where for the wildlife to move to.

so, we either protect the area for the wildlife, or the wildlife dies out
