The United States entered the war in 1917 on the side of the Allies

Aside for the tragedy of the war in which over 10 million people died, the conflict was notable for four principal reasons:
1) It was the first "modern" war in the sense that destruction was not limited to armies on a battlefield but extended to the destruction of cities as well. This disregard for the "gentlemanly" rules of war became known as "total war." It was also the first time that the modern weapons such as machine guns, tanks, and airplanes (and poison gas) were first employed, with devasting effects.
2) In the wake of the war, the League of Nations was formed.
3) The border lines of Europe were redrawn, creating the modern states of Hungary and Austria, and the war signaled the end of the Ottoman Empire and the birth of the Turkish state.
4) Through the Treaty of Versailles, Germany was severely punished and made to pay exorbate war reparations, which crippled the German economy and laid the foundation for the rise of Adolph Hitler and the Nazi Party a generation later.
