Trakehners are one of the German warmblood breeds. The breed was heavily influenced at its foundation by Arab and Thoroughbred blood. The result is a very refined warmblood breed, one with higher energy and lots of stamina. Nowadays, the breed has a closed studbook unlike many of the other German warmbloods which are constantly introducing modern Thoroughbred blood.

The Trakehner is well suited both for jumping and eventing at some of the highest levels of the sport. It has the strength, athleticism, and endurance of its Thoroughbred and Arab influences. Its conformation is usually quite god, known for very sound feet (unlike the Thoroughbred), hard limbs, and short cannon bones. Like the Thoroughbred, it can get a bit long in the back, which can sometimes lead to arthritis and other complications later in life. On the upside, they often have very strong hindquarters, excellent in the jumpers ring for powering over the biggest fences. I don't ever recommend them for beginners, as all of the Trakehners I've worked with have been quite spirited, even later in life. Many warmbloods are known for a calmer disposition once they mature a bit, but Trakehners seem to retain their freshness even into their late teens and twenties. They are also quite athletic and many of them are very talented.

Like every breed, their temperament, conformation, and ability varies from horse to horse. Horses are individuals with distinct personalities of their own. If you're looking for a talented jumper or eventer, and your riding ability is at least that of an advanced-intermediate, you may want to consider the breed.

I cant think of anything bad about the breed. They are large 16-17 hands have good bone and muscle definition. Ive never wanted a Trakehner myself but I do know of a lady who has one. Currenly we own an arabian, belgian draft, Tennessee walker, buckskin, paint, and a quarterhorse..All of them can have temperment problems or medical/joint issues really depends on the horse and breeding

Edit** I just read your edit. If your looking to purchase the horse you should spend some time with it. If the person is seriously wanting to sale it they wont mind. When I purchase my horses I ride them and will not just ride them in a small confinded area or a short period of time, and I even go back and reride. I walk behind the horse touch the horse lift their feet and so forth making sure it will not spook. There are websites I am sure can give you tons of information on this breed. Like I said before I dont own one but a lady friend of mine does and she's happy with him.

I have always wanted a Trakehner! They are very strong horses as well as very intelligent. They make great eventing horses. However the breed does have many medical problems. Like most warmbloods there are many joint issues to be carful of, that's alot of weight, and if jumping alot of impact on their joints. But they are still so beautiful, I want one so bad!
