Amorphous means "without shape". When the term is applied to solar cells it means that the silicon material that makes up the cell is not highly structured or crystalized.
Crystallinity refers to the degree of structural order in a solid. In a crystal, the atoms or molecules are arranged in a regular, periodic manner. In a gas, the relative positions of the atoms or molecules are completely random. Amorphous materials, such as liquids and glasses, represent an intermediate case, having order over short distances (a few atomic or molecular spacings) but not over longer distances.

Chemically pure solids characterised by the absence of an order structure, i.e., those lacking a regular arrangement of atoms are known as amorphous bodies. They are classed with isotropic substances, i.e., those which have uniform physical properities in all directions. In contrast to crystalline substances, in amorphous substances the change of the aggregate state is gradual. Amorphous substances often result from extremely rapid solidification of melted viscous masses. Amorphous substances are liable to change to crystalline masses only when kept for a prolonged period in softened state at a temperature close to the melting point.

1. lacking definite form; having no specific shape; formless: the amorphous clouds. 2. of no particular kind or character; indeterminate; having no pattern or structure; unorganized: an amorphous style; an amorphous personality. 3. Petrography, Mineralogy. occurring in a mass, as without stratification or crystalline structure. 4. Chemistry. not crystalline. 5. Something like plastic or glass -- no consistent crystalline structure. Amorphous solids tend to have 'messy breaks' rather than fracturing cleanly. They tend to soften before they fully melt.

An amorphous solid is a solid in which there is no long-range order of the positions of the atoms. (Solids in which there is long-range atomic order are called crystalline solids or morphous).

amorphous means it doesnt have a shape. its like plasma. It shapes itself into what its container is. for example: gum is amorphous. because it has no deifinate shape.
