I see that you are asking this as a poll. I oppose the death penalty because it is not an effective way of keeping us safe and it buries its worst mistakes. Here are some facts about the death penalty system in the United States, verifiable and sourced-

Re: Deterrence
The death penalty isn’t a deterrent. Murder rates are actually higher in states with the death penalty than in states without it. Moreover, people who kill or commit other serious crimes do not think about the consequences or even that they will be caught (if they think at all.)

Re: cost
The death penalty costs far more than life in prison. The huge extra costs start to mount up even before the trial. There are more cost effective ways to prevent and control crime.

Re: Alternatives
48 states have life without parole on the books. It means what it says, is swift and sure and is rarely appealed. Being locked in a tiny cell for 23 hours a day, forever, is certainly no picnic. Life without parole incapacitates a killer (keeps him from re-offending) and costs considerably less than the death penalty.

Re: Possibility of executing an innocent person
Over 120 people on death rows have been released with evidence of their innocence, many having already served over 2 decades on death row. If we speed up the process we are bound to execute an innocent person. Once someone is executed the case is closed. If we execute an innocent person the real criminal is still out there and will have successfully avoided being charged.

Re: DNA
DNA is available in less than 10% of murder cases. It’s not a miracle cure for sentencing innocent people to death. It’s human nature to make mistakes.

Re: Who gets the death penalty
The death penalty isn’t reserved for the “worst of the worst,” but rather for defendants with the worst lawyers. When is the last time a wealthy person was sentenced to death, let alone executed??

Re: Victims families
The death penalty is very hard on victims’ families. They must relive their ordeal in the courts and the media. Life without parole is sure, swift and rarely appealed. Some victims families who support the death penalty in principal prefer life without parole because of how the death penalty affects families like theirs.

Opposing the death penalty doesn’t mean you condone brutal crimes or excuse people who commit them. According to a Gallup Poll, in 2006, 47% of all Americans prefer capital punishment while 48% prefer life without parole. Americans are learning the facts and making up their minds using common sense, not revenge or sloganeering.

Well, yes I don't agree its right for us to decide who lives or dies. Do I think some people deserve it YES! Though I wonder how many people have been wrongly convicted and sentenced, this is a number we will never know for sure. Its not our place to kill anyone. Though I do understand that you don't want truly evil people living off tax dollars. I believe you can imprison someone for life and still have them do some work on the inside to pull their own weight. Besides isn't it true prison is also a very big business that shows large profits every year, and is never in the red? Why kill someone who can still make this country money? Everyone dies so does making it sooner really mater? Personally I would prefer the death sentence to life in prison! So I just don't see the point in capital punishment.

death penalty is cruel.that will also finish the person easily, more comfortably for himself, than the crime he/she actually did. allowing to live in prison,all thru the life is the best.but the person should not be let out even in parole.to be kept in isolation within four walls. this is more than a death penalty.this will be suitable for assassins and paid killer
But,there are some criminals, who commit murders,child rape,inhuman acts of crime as casual as possible, and for those who do serial killing ,likewise the DEATH PENALTY is a must,so that they could be driven out of the society of humans.
SO, I AM FOR AND AGAINST THE DEATH PENALTY, WHICH SHOULD BE ACCORDING TO THE CRIME ,CASE AND THE WAY IN WHICH THE CRIME IS COMMITTED.
for your question, one can not give answer YES or NO.

It doesn't really matter for or against to be honest

It means that it is against human rights and USA is only one of 3 countries in the world that allow execution of people under 18 (kids)

Everyone has a right to live no matter what you do on this planet - perhaps I would think otherwise if I was affected by a killer or something else but now it's my true opinion that is not shadowed by spite anger and me being upset.

If the sentence is a life sentence, then yes.

If the person can outlive his sentence, then no.

Simply because it actually costs like more than $10,000.00 per year to keep a person in jail. So if the guy has a life sentence, then yes.

The only big obstacle for the death sentence is that later on if the guy is found innocent because of new evidence, then the biggest crime has been commited, a dead innocent man.

Against. Why?

- evidence that it's a deterrent is speculative at best and there's a lot of evidence suggesting that it's no deterrent at all;

- a serious number of innocent people have been wrongly convicted and put to death;

- it tends to be applied differentially, so that people from disadvantaged groups are more likely to be killed;

- I don't want to belong to a state that reserves the right to kill people - that's my personal moral choice.
