I'm hoping to be buying my mothers house from her and she has a huge, I mean huge back yard. Now, I noticed the ant hills and seen snakes back thier too. I plan to put a fence to block the open space she has behind the back yard but I'm still nervouse cause I have a five year old and lots of nieces and nephews to think about! If someone could give me some pointers that would be great. Thanx!!!

Nuthing to worry about. Snakes don't like them (or you) either. And they are fast. Takes quite a bit of effort to catch one as a kid. They won't do anything to harm your kids. They eat worms, larvae, grubs, sometimes a mouse. They keep the yard free of alot of pests. They are there because there is food there. Maybe alot of mice. Choice between a mouse and a snake / snake wins. Mice have been known to eat eyeballs out of sleeping babies.
ant nests? What color ants. The red ones bite. Black ones don't generally speaking. Not a worry again, I have yet to find a kid who likes to have these things crawl on their arm or leg. Too tickly. Kids will lose interst in these creatures fair quick.
One thing you can be glad about. It is safe out there. These creatures live. What would your thoughts be if there was absolutely nothing ALIVE out there? If nothing was surviving but plants, then it has to be awash in insecticides and poisons.
You want to let your kids go into that environment?
