As the other posters have said to promote fairness, the other thing that needs to be taken into consideration is MONEY. If you have player A who's contract is expiring at the end of the season and player B who has 2 years remaining. The team that would trades for either of these players also picks up their contract as well, meaning that they pick up their price tag.

Yeah. Say there was no trade dead line. And the Colts had wanted to pick up good line backer to solidify their D. Why not just grab Joey Porter during the playoffs? Its not fair at all. Teams should play with the players that got them there.
