I own a 3 inch western painted turtle. He lives in a 55gal tank with many, many tank mates. The following is a list:

5 silver dollars
6 neon tetras
3 baby mollies
3 rainbow sharks
1 'perfect shaped' goldfish
2 plecos(one is there temporarily, he's leaving soon)
1 upside down cat fish
many, many ghost shrimp.

i have two Whisper 30gal filters running in it, and a 501 Turtle Filter. This keeps the water crystal clear. Levels are all safe, and everyone is happy.

I started keeping Hachi(my turt) with fish when he was about three months old. I started with three larger goldfish that he chased often, but never got ahold of. I then bought a dozen neon tetras from the store(less than 1/2 inch long) and a dozen or so feeder guppies. These are fast fish and baby turtles are slow swimmers, so i figured it would be fine.

Turned out it was. Now he lets the baby mollies pick his shedding skin off and wont even try to eat them when they're right in front of his face. I believe this has something to do with his feeding(he's fed once in the morning, and several times at night, small portions). He also seems to like the company of the mollies. He leaves everything alone, and no, he's never gotten any disease or infection from living with fish.

i suggst you too start with a dozen feeder guppies, or a few larger goldfish, and feed them often so they learn they dont need the fish.

However, word of caution, my RES(5 yrs in June) still eats fish like candy. I'm trying to wean him so he can be placed in the 55 for winter(he's in a horse trough now) but he wont have any of it. He likes his fish and thats the way it's staying. So it all has to do with the personality. Hopefully yours are wonderful little angels. Then you'll be able to keep a whole bunch of stuff in there!

I have plenty of fish with my two RES. You can definately put plecos with a turtle. Their Extreme skeletal system pretty much protects them from being eaten. Your turtle may nip at the fins a little, but the will grow back. Make sure you use fish that are as long as the turtle also, agressive fish tend to avoid being eaten better. Good luck!

Disease is not the problem. Sliders eat fish (more than other turtles, like Painteds, do.)

You can try big fish, tiny fish, armored fish, fast fish (why do I want to say 'one fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish' so bad?)

if the turtles are big, get little fish. If the turtles are small, be careful if getting bigger fishes because the turtle can make the fish suffer by eating it slowley.
