I never understood this either until I had a cup. I've never been a coffee drinker but I love it. It's always at just the right temperature so that u can sip it right away which is convenient. And I love the little sippy cup-- it must be nostalgic. As far is the price. They charge so much because they can. Their service is unique. If they had more competitors, I guess the price would go down. I've heard they're already loosing some of their fizzle. Maybe it's because their product are sold on grocery store shelves.

It depends what country you are in.
In Australia it's hideously expensive (about $AUS4 for a cappuccino or latte) and completely not worth it because there is way better coffee elsewhere. Australia (or at least the cities like Sydney and Melbourne) has awesome Italian-style espresso coffee for half the price. Starbucks has only been in Australia for a couple for years and it's not doing brilliantly.
In the UK, the price of a Starbucks (£1.70) is on par with the price you pay for espresso in almost every cafe in the country. This is combined with the fact that most of the coffee in the UK is crap. Starbucks coffee is not great, it's just middle of the road (they buy top quality beans but they don't know how to make it - it's usually far too milky). But it's all relative and in the UK it's the best of a bad bunch.
Starbucks is awesome when you are travelling in Asia because it's one of the few places you can go for a decent caffeine hit AND the cafes are air-conditioned, which is a blessed relief when travelling in hot places.

I just can't see tipping at Starbucks any more than I would at Burger King. It's not like they bring your order to the table (as in a diner/restaurant) and they only make strictly what's listed on the menu (as opposed to a bar, where a bartender can serve you any of thousands of different kinds of drinks that you could ask for, and even gives you free drinks if you order enough). If the baristas don't get paid much by their employer, I don't see why that's the customers' problem. Gas station attendants don't get paid much either, and you don't see them begging and trying to make the customer pay their salary.

Brainwashing!!!!! It's expensive because customers perceive them to be a higher end products and who is Starbucks to disagree whit that. Charge what the market allows.
Recent reports in the media are showing sales down so perhaps customers are getting smarter. Why do people pay? I answered that part above. Check out the trend....

Starbucks is [relatively] expensive because it's brand-name coffee, and it's so good. People pay for it, because they love great coffee, and they want to get it in a hurry.

If you actually like coffee and drink it for the taste you understand why people like it and will pay for it. I really like their espresso and going for a double espresso for under $2 isn't that bad of a deal in my opinion.
It really depends on what you order as to whether or not it's expensive.

It's a status symbol, a little bit of "luxury."
I think the baristas get paid well, and I don't mind paying more if it means a livable hourly wage for the employees. Can someone confirm this?
