I sub about 3-4 times a month. I have 3 children the oldest is in kindergarten. On days that I sub, my sister takes my kids for a small payment. I find substituting works great with my schedule, because I can cancel if there's a sick kid, or not work at all when the weather's nice. I can make an extra $300-$500 a month w/o the committment of a contract. Perfect for moms that stay home that want to make a little money on the side.

You cannot look at substitute teachers as one person...you need to look at them as individual people. Some of them are retired and are just looking for a little extra money. Some of them are college students and subbing is their part-time job. For some people, this is what they do for a living...their spouse might be the one that has the full-time job. For some they are in-between jobs and are just doing this until something better comes along. Others might sub because they are looking to become a teacher and want an "in" in the school system.

Wait to be telephoned to substitute another teacher who will be absent. It can be by choice and it can be the result of fate. But that's what substitute teachers do the rest of the time.

Last year when all of my kids were in school, I signed up to sub and I could have worked everyday if I wanted to. The phone never stopped ringing. I own a business, so I didn't, but I think you could do it full time. The money isn't bad.

They must have another job. Maybe tutoring?
