Take the U trap off underneath the sink and see if it is blocked there. Put a bowl or bucket underneath to catch any water. If the trap is clear, then the blockage is further down the line.

I had this problem and the way I cured it was to remove the ubend under the sink, putting a bowl under it to catch any water. Check that this is clear of any muck.
The fault is usually beyond this point going towards the drain. To clear this you need a rodding pipe. An old lenght of hose pipe with a bolt rammed in the end is ideal.
Ram this as far as you can, you will feel the blockage move. Reassemble sink and check by running taps.
The washing machine should be OK, because the water had nowhere to go,it back flowed into the washer.
You can buy a drain rodder from the likes of B&Q etc.

The best way to clear a drain in manually NOT CHEMICALLY. If a plunger doesn't work then disconnect the trap and use a spring snake. If it is the laundry tub that is stopped up, in the future use a lint trap or an old pantyhose stocking over the discharge hose to prevent link from going down the drain. The water leaking into the washing machine would be a solenoid malfunction and if your not familiar with the function on it you should let a repairman fix it.

Try boiling hot water off the stove in large pots where you can stand on a stool and pour the water down the drain directly from 2+ feet in the air to pound down that hot water. And let the water sit in the sink until it either cools down or breaks thru. If it cools down and you can't plunge to freedom, bail out the sink and try again.
After that the only thing you got left to do is dismantle the p-trap under the sink and clean it manually.

A plunger is always the best thing, if this doesn't work try "one shot" (good hardware shop sell it) drain cleaner, as for the washing machine, the outlet is too low, you'll need to raise it up and secure it, so its higher than the sink connection.

Try using a plunger, this usually works for me. Buy a cover fro over the drain hole this will save 'bits' going down into U bend and blocking it.
As for the water leaking back into the washer, go to local plumbing shop and purchase a non-return valve, this lets water from washer into drain but prevents it coming back into machine. Measure pipe first so you get the right size, I think they come in 2 or 3 sizes.

U can use a bathroom plunger on your sink but you need to hold the drain plug on the second drain side by putting a dish towel in it. the washing machine needs a no return shut off valve replaced in it, I had one to go out on mine and I had to get a repairman to fix it for me, you can buy the part at a shop if you can do the job yourself but it's hard work.
