Old Yeller is a 1956 book by Fred Gipson. The title is taken from the name of the fictional Mountain Cur who is a main character in the book. The book won the Newbery Honor in 1956. The 1957 film adaptation Old Yeller starred Dorothy McGuire and Tommy Kirk and was directed by Robert Stevenson.

[edit] Plot Summary
Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.
The story takes place in the late 1800s. The family portrayed in the book, the Coates, consists of father Jim, mother Katie, eldest son Travis, and his younger brother Arliss. They are extremely poor, and when the father and all the other men in nearby homes must leave on a cattle drive, Travis is left as the man of the house. Soon after, a yellow dog shows itself, and generally causes havoc. Much to Travis's chagrin, Arliss takes a liking to the dog, and his mother Katie forces him to keep "Ol' Yeller."ello govenor its we fly high no lie

Through a series of trials and tribulations, such as Yeller's real owner showing up, and fun times, such as watching bulls fight, Travis begins to bond to the dog, finding him to be a companion as well as indispensable help around the farm. The major problem occurs when the family is warned about an outbreak of hydrophobia (which we now call rabies). One dark night, an infected wolf comes to their humble farm, and Yeller tries to protect his family. Yeller is brutally injured and, unable to take the risk of infecting any of the family with hydrophobia, Travis must shoot Yeller. However, in the end, he accepts one of the pups Yeller had with another local dog (who would later be named Savage Sam, as shown in the book's sequel). Jim Coates soon returns with a horse for Travis who had begged for an equine steed before his father left. Savage Sam is the book's sequel.

A boy longs for a dog. Dad goes away on a hunting trip. Later, boy finds a dog who is rummaging through their garbage. Boy keeps dog. Boy teaches dog to hunt. Dog rabies. Boy is sad and has to shoot dog.

I read the book about a year ago, I didn't think it was that good. I hope my memory helped.
