You're absolutely right that there have been successful short QBs, and Drew Brees is a great example. However, Troy Smith has nothing in common with Brees except his height. There are a lot of reasons besides his height why scouts aren't crazy about Smith.
1. His release time is incredibly slow, unlike Brees, who has a lightning fast release time. This is the very first thing I noticed about Smith. It takes about a week between the time he decides to throw the ball and the time it leaves his hand.
2. His accuracy is pretty inconsistent.
3. There are a lot of questions about his character and intelligence.

Yeah, it particularly is odd that top and one college interest made a guy fall from capacity right 20 %. to possibly first 6 ROUNDS %.... He did undesirable against Florida grow to be a great issue with Troy Smith. If he can not compete against the Florida protection, NFL defenses might kill him. there isn't any doubt, Troy Smith has a great form of capacity if he could make amends for his top like Drew Brees can. i think of he's a available starter if McNair gets harm and maybe after he retires. i think of that for a 5th around...almost 6th around %., he grow to be a thieve at that factor for a lower back up QB. He additionally did no longer artwork out on the combine...that tells some thing approximately his artwork ethic in case you question me. a guy that particularly needs to play interior the NFL and tutor easily everyone what he can do might participate. He did do some drills, yet it particularly is purely dumb, why no longer circulate all out and attempt getting drafted quicker, make some funds and save slightly appreciate.

Well, for every Drew Brees or Doug Flutie there are lots of short QBs who just can't cut it in the pros. I think the prevailing opinion among NFL scouts is that Smith is not actually as athletic or talented as many of his peers, and had such success simply because he had a high-powered offense and was throwing to Gonzalez and Ginn. Someone like JaMarcus Russell who can throw the ball 80 yards is more appealing, especially when you consider that Russell won his bowl game this year.

Troy Smith is a great athlete - no question about that, but so were other Heisman winning QB's like Andre Ware, Charlie Ward, and Eric Crouch. After the season, some draft analysts projected Smith as high as a 2nd-Round pick, but the combine confirmed that he lacked ideal height and arm strength to be considered a solid NFL starter.

Scouts follow a pattern or range of characteristics that thier GM's and owners, coaches tell them to look for. At this point Troy does not fit those requirements. Of course it does not mean he's not capable of playing, he just may have to take a different route to prove it. Height can be an issue, but Pat Haden, Fran Tarkenton, Doug Flutie, Drew Brees have all shown they can play.......but not enough to win it all

Troy Smith is nothing. He played for a talent laden team in college. Granted, he has turned his life around from the bad that haunted him as a youth. But I see him as no more than a back up at the NFL level. He just isn't built for success in that league. If the speed of the Florida defense messed him up that much, think of what an NFL D would do.

Did any of you idiots watch him play ANY games other than the national championship?!?! I'm assuming not because you'd see that about 90% of the games they played he won on HIS athletic ability! He can throw the long ball, he's got GREAT speed (I have no clue what that one douche was talking about when he said he was slow) he has excellent mechanics, and great field vision! What happened in the national championship was nothing more than a FLUKE! Ohio State came in there underestimating a team, and they got whooped, end of story. And because of that you're going to take that credibility away from Troy Smith and the BUCKEYES! Everyone ALWAYS hates on the BUCKEYES and the BIG TEN because THEY ARE THE MOST DOMINATE CONFERENCE IN COLLEGE SPORTS! MORE PRIDE, MORE TRADITION, AND MORE TALENT THAN ANY OTHER CONFERENCE! AND ANYONE WHO DISAGREES WITH THAT IS JUST A F-ING RETARD!

So the whole world is a bunch of retards because they don't agree with your arrogant ***, Fizzle? Great ego you have. Smith is a very good athlete but I am not paid to be a NFL scout. They must see something we don't.

because jamarcus russell is such a great athlete and troy smith just went out of the national spotlight after losing the championship game.

like you said...size...he wont go totally overlooked but teams like the size and strength of russell. They also like Brady Quinn's decisionmaking and accuracy. Athletic quarterbacks are good to have but everyone is afraid they will wind up like Mike Vick, which is unable to lead his team anywhere in the playoffs. He'll go late in the first round
