I know this is difficult but my sister and I want to start a business but we are not sure what to do. Tanning salon, pizzeria, what sounds good that wont cost 6 digits?

It is easiest to start out with a home business. Think about what interests you and your sister. Some easy home businesses are:

1) Affiliate sales. This involves selling goods and services from manufacturers on a commission basis.
2) Gift baskets. These are in great demand.
3) Answering service, bookkeeping, and mail service for other small businesses.

If you want a business outside the home, look into buying a franchise for a cafe, a pizzeria or a laundry. A franchise entails less risk than an independent business.

Hope this helps.

Crash,
Everyone here seems to be on the same page. You need to find something that you are passionate about and then go for it. Any time you start a business there are costs, but starting something like a salon or a pizza shop will require a LOT of upfront cash. If you have this and have a great credit record then GO GIRL! Go get it!
Like the other responders said, there are home based opportunities that pay. They also take the "I am my own boss and this is on me" attitude but there isn't as much up front. If you treat it like a business then it can be a very lucrative place to be. Check into all of them. Talk with your sister and see what interests her the most. You can join forces together and go real far!! Sisters have that connection.
I work at home (I have 5 kids) and I work with a lot of other stay-at-home moms or moms that are dying to stay home and we have a great time. It is work and isn't overnight, but we are having fun on the journey!
Check out my link and if you are interested in this opportunity then you can email me directly through my profile.
Good luck in your search!!!

Think of all your interests & ask yourself if any of those could be expanded into a business. Just keep in mind...what's your expertise? What are your interests? What could you imagine yourself doing?

By researching the prospect of starting your own business -- what it entails, what you need to know, helpful hints, etc -- you'll feel better prepared to take that plunge.

As you will have seen from the other answers, starting any business requires capital usually a lot. But a good home based business can be started with a small outlay.
The problem is finding a reliable business which offers a proper rewards system for your efforts, and which is simple to do.

My wife and I enjoy doing network marketing. It's the cheapest and easiest way to start your own business and start making money immediately. The key is to find a company that is established, well endorsed, has a good product or service and a need in the marketplace. You don't want to get into some fad where you have to purchase a lot of supplies and then try to sell it all. If you'd like to hear more about the New York stock exchange company we work with, give me a call at 573-819-9817. Good luck!

Try a home business. There are tons to pick from and they are usually a low start up cost. Not to mention you can work the hours you want and you don't have to have employee's. I have had a home business for a year now and love it. Xango is the company I work for.
