No one makes it to the top without stepping on some toes unless they are born there, and even then, to stay there they have to step on toes to prevent others from kicking them out of their position.
The key is not to avoid stepping on toes but to step on them in such a manner as to kill the person whose toes you step on. Crippling them is not good enough. They have to die.
Back to the vampires. A vampire bites a woman for sexual pleasure and to stay alive. A vampire eats a man to stay alive and to make sure that he does not create another vampire. Why? Vampires are territorial and like the gorilla there can be only one vampire in charge. It is a Machiavellian thing. You not only kill the person but you wipe out their family as well.
You want to know why they don't care. The fact is they do care but not for the toes. They care for the knife that person will use to stab them in the back or in the case of the Vampire, the stake that will be plunged into their unbeating heart.
Rule #95 in business, If you don't want your toes stepped on then pick a good partner, learn to lead, and never wear open toe shoes. This is good advise for dancers as well.

Because we want to get to the top. And, as long as you don't plan on going back down, it doesn't matter. Why are there some people that are complacent being in the middle or the bottom?

I couldn't tell you. I guess God had a plan when he made us all different. Personally, I care about who I hurt for the most part to get what I want.
