The move "The Departed": What does costello give Sullivan?

You remember the scene where Sullivan graduates and he gets in the car with Costello and the driver and Costello says something like:
"No more questions. No more books"
He gives him something in the car. Is there any clue what this is, or is it supposed to symbolize something?
