It's the first part of Dante's The Divine Comedy (followed by Purgatorio and Paradisio), the tale of a man who travels through the afterlife.
During Inferno, he visits all the levels of hell (based on the Seven Deadly Sins). The lowest level is Pride, because that's what the Devil exhibited (read Milton's Paradise Lost for even more talk of Satan and his pride).

It's a guided tour through Hell. A middle aged Dante (the Pilgrim) awakes to find himself at the base of a hill with a dark forest at his back. Though it is dim where he stands, he sees a light at the top of the hill. He climbs towards the light, but is stopped by three beasts: the leopard, the lion, and the wolf...
I will just say that the story goes on from there. Go ahead and see this site for more info...

It a long poem written in Italian by Dante which describes an imaginary visit to the various levels of hell by the poet guided by the Roman poet Virgil.
The most famous line is written above the doorway "Abandon hope all ye who enter here".
The various levels of hell have people graded by how unrighteous they were (according to Dante and the Church of his day). The first level has basically righteous pagans, the deepest level is reserved for traitors.

It can be difficult, but I suggest checking your library for authors who can guide you through it. I particularly like Charles William's "
Figure of Beatrice"
He understood Dante.
