Yes dear I can tell you from having had four C-sections that they give you an epidural. That is the only way that you can be awake to see your baby being born! You will undoubtedly have the option of how much you want to actually see. I always had them support me so that I could watch as they pulled the babies out. It was SO exciting! I LOVED having my babies that way. I got to watch them being born, they let me nurse them while I was being stitched back up and the pain did not start for hours. At the pain starts to slowly creep up on you be sure to ask for pain medication. That way you stay ahead of it and it never gets the best of you. The wonderful thing about it is that you are in control of the pain, you can always make it stop. It only hurts when you do certain things, you can always stop and make the pain go away! I always had the IV, morphine thingy....you push the button and basically it gives you a dose of morphine. It is wonderful.
Having C-sections never gave me any trouble when it came to breastfeeding either. I nursed all of my babies until they were well over 1 year old.
The nice thing about the epidural is that when it is done you know that it was the last discomfort you will feel until you hold your precious baby in your arms! So well worth it.
They offer C-section Childbirth classes, if you have time to take them they are really wonderful. They teach you so much and can make a huge difference in what kind of an experience you will have!
Good luck, you will have a wonderful time!
If you would like more details just write to me and I would love to write back.
Love and Blessings

Generally speaking, as far as I know, they usually keep you awake, but numbed by an epidural when you have a c-section.
Although, my cousin was put to sleep when she had hers, the reason being that she went through natural labor and couldn't have her son vaginally, so instead of dealing with an epidural and waiting on it to get put in and numbed and stuff, they just put her under general anesthesia (aka-knocked her out).
There's always circumstances that could change that, but I think it's standard with most docs that they keep you awake during the c-section.
I had an epidural and vaginal delivery, so I don't have first-hand knowledge of that per se.

For scheduled c-sections, we typically use a spinal anesthetic. It's similar to an epidural, but the needle is much smaller and the block is usually denser, so you feel less.
If you have an epidural in place for labor, we can inject stronger medicine through it and use it for a c-section.
General anesthesia is reserved for emergencies, women who won't clot, and some pre-eclamptic women. The risks of general are much higher than the risks of spinal or epidural anesthesia in pregnant women.

I had something called a spinal block, which I assume is very similar to an epidural. A spinal block totally numbs you fromthe waist down where an epidural leaves you with some sensation in order to push.

with my first c-section I had already had my epidural so they just movd the block up.
With my planned C-section they gave me a spinal which was much nicer because it had pain killers that laster for 24 hours already in the mix.
If it is planned they are more likely to give you a spinal. And you are awake either way. Only in extreme cases to they put you all the way out.

Yes. Most C sections are done under an epidural anaesthesia, so you can be part of the delivery and bonding process.

That is what they use the make you completely numb so that you can still be awake during the c-section to see the baby. The only difference is that with a c section the epi is much stronger than with regular labor.

Yes, you do have an epi when you have a c-section. It's the best way for you to be conscious during the delivery. They won't put you under unless it's an emergency.
