If you have run a marathon or are considering running a marathon - what things can supporters do to make themselves more noticable to you when they are cheering at the side of the road?

I work in running events and we would like to give our runners the best support possible but amongst a crowd of 1000's of people we feel we get drowned out a bit by the crowd and would like to improve.

Any tips from a runners persepective?

Ive ran two London marathons and would have ran this years one too but due to injury i had to pull out.Runners love the support from the crowd its what makes London so special, rain or shine there around in huge numbers and its great to see and hear.Runners never focus on the crowd unless they see friends or family but i always love the sound of the music made by people there, its great to hear.Get a band together is my advice.

I was too lazy to run this year but was inspired into seriously thinking of entering next year. Because I stood and watched the annual Half Marathon in Reading last Sunday, in which about 10,000 people took part. Comments made by participants afterwards indicate that the support they got this year from people watching was "the best they had ever known".and I certainly clapped and clapped as these wonderful people went past me but I felt a bit ashamed thinking why am I such a lazy unfit git, I should be out there running too like them! And make myself fit and healthy like they are and enjoy the day as much as they are.

I heard later the Mayor of Reading and his Lady who stood at the finishing line and clapped every single one of the 9,877 people who finished the 13.1 mile course in the Madejski football Stadium and their hands must have been pretty sore at the end of it too, but the gesture was so much appreciated by everybody in Reading and it did the Mayor's reputation a power of good too and there was almost as much support given to the Kenyan Simon Kasimil who won in a time of 1 hour 3.36 mins as for people crossing the finishing line utterly exhausted 5 hours after him. But the congratulations right through the event and appreciation extended was totally genuine because of the excellent coverage the event got in the local press and on local radio and TV. .

I.

The only marathon I ever run was when I first met my wife and we were young and passionate...and it did not involve long stretches of roads...(although there was some sweating) ;-)
