Interesting bit of trivia. Clark Gable played Rhett, but the studio actually wanted Gary Cooper. Cooper took a pass on the role because he didn't think it fit his image. Errol Flynn petitioned heavily for the part but was turned down because he was "too English." When the TV sequel was made, the part of Rhett Butler went to Timothy Dalton. An Englishman.
