No. The BBC is payed for by the licence and therefore if it was paid for by commercials then we would not have to pay.
BUT the BBC has a responsibility to provide a wide range of services like shows with sign language for deaf viewers, the shipping forecast for fishermen (on Radio 4), educational shows for toddlers and babies, shows about nature and the environment and many more things.
IF the BBC was a commercial TV station like SKY then it would not have to provide these services and as such many people's lives would become much sadder and more isolated. The BBC is not just a TV station it is a service that does a lot more than any other similar enterprise in any other nation and because a lot of the shows it makes (like the sign language ones for example) would not be commercially popular it could not make them without the licence fee.
I myself do not watch much TV - basically the news, Doctor Who and some occasional comedy shows but I am glad to play my licence fee knowing that it helps make shows that make the lives of other people much richer and more integrated into mainstream British culture.

no because the tv licence funds the tv shows being made, however advertising and the revenue it generates from this would subsidise those costs much more effectively and efficiently. thus there wouldn't be any need for us to fork out the money, year on year out. the BBC should scrap the licence fee and like every other channel have advertising

no, but then that would take away their dictatorship of money grabbing from the general public.
In my case I get all my tv, even bbc, through sky, which i pay monthly for.
This is because i live in a remote area and the signal from an aerial is...basically crap so sky was my only option. So technically i am paying for somethng i don't use.

No, but this would be the end of the BBC as we know it. Their schedules would probably become similar to ITV's, filled with game shows, soap operas and populist drama. Say goodbye to current affairs in primetime schedules, innovation, politically controversial drama, Radio 3 , BBC4 and BBC Parliament.

The Government would do their darndest to keep it as it is a nice little earner. However there is a precedent as car radio licences were abolished in the late 1960's.

In theory "No" as they funded directly out of the licence fee. However, I suspect they wouls still try and make a charge.
