I was fiddling with my belly button the other day and picked some bits out thinking I was giving it a good clean (not that I'm particularly dirty or indeed that they were any particularly big bits to speak of) but now I find it is secreting moisture, not blood or puss of anything too yucky. If left to dry it goes crispy. This got me thinking - where is the moisture coming from? is it intercellular fluid, or part of my lymph fluid or something else? what is behind my belly button? what is at the bottom of it (as it funnels in but I can't see the bottom of where the skin joins if indeed it does)? Any information would be greatly received

This just is. The point of the umbilicus is like any other point of the body... Since you are alive, so too is this area alive and does not stop expressing just because it is one of the least observed areas of the body...

It is highly nerve-responsive there, too, you will notice. And there is reason for that... But all is normal...

Dust and dirt accumulates, sweat sets then dries, and the sebaceous glands are no less active there than in any other part of the body.

Just be attentive to yourself, keep clean, that's all. Nothing is wrong...

it is just accumalation of sweat. generally this happens as these areas are not generally exposed much, also considering hygeine it tends to collect a lot of dust and irritants which might sstimulate sebaceous or oily secretions forming 'goo'. please maintain proper hygeine or it may lead to more serious problems than 'goo' like infections, inflammation, abscess.etc. also as the umbilicus is the weakest part of ypou abdominal wall the infection may spread to youe intra-abdominal organs and create havoc.

For a start stop picking it!!! (yuck!)

Isn't it still attached to your stomach somehow as you can get infections in it etc. Also when small operations are done on that area they can go through your navel. So I say if you're making it pussy stop picking it!!
