I am WAY old enough to be knowlegable about the both excellent athletes.
Kobe isn’t half the player that Michael was…and thats why he has half the rings that MJ does. All Kobe’s rings came because Shaq was the leader of the Lakers. Michael was the leader of his team in all 6 NBA Championships. Michael was a career .497 shooter…Kobe is a career .451 shooter. Jordan averaged 30.1 points per game…Kobe averages 23.9 point per game.
Michael Jordan’s vs Kobe Bryant’s career:
Michael Jordan 6-time NBA champion (1991-93, 1996-98)
Kobe Bryant 3-time NBA champion
Michael Jordan 5-time MVP (1988, ‘91, ‘92, ‘96, ‘98)
Kobe Bryant 0 NBA MVP’s
Michael Jordan 10-time All-NBA First Team (1987-93, 1996-98)
Kobe Bryant 3-time All-NBA First Team
Michael Jordan 1 Defensive Player of the Year (1988)
Kobe Bryant 0 Defensive Player of the Year
Michael Jordan 9-time All-Defensive First Team (1988-93, 1996-98)
Kobe Bryant 3-time All-Defensive First Team
Michael Jordan Rookie of the Year (1985)
Kobe Bryant All-Rookie 2nd Team
Michael Jordan 14-time All-Star
Kobe Bryant 6-time All-Star
Michael Jordan 3 All-Star MVP (1988, ‘96, ‘98)
Kobe Bryant 1 All-Star MVP
Michael Jordan One of 50 Greatest Players in NBA History (’96)
Kobe Bryant not on the list (but could be at a later date)
Michael Jordan Olympic gold medalist (1984, ‘92)
Kobe Bryant 0 Olympic Gold Medals
Michael Jordan 1 NCAA Championship
Kobe Bryant 0 NCAA Championships
Michael Jordan 0 girls raped
Kobe Bryant 1 Girl raped
However, this is not to say that Kobe cannot eventually rise to His Airness's level, but it will take a HUGE improvement in his personal life, and longer time on the court.

I was born after 1980, but I think that I can still answer this question. How about this, since a player is only as good as the team which he is on, Kobe has to get better teammates before he can be considered on near the same level as Jordan. Individually, Jordan also has the edge because Jordan has this determination that has since yet to be seen again in the NBA. He has this drive and used his skill to win several things. Although if it was a three-point shooting contest I'd have top give the edge to Kobe...

I agree. Kobe may put up better numbers, but will never have the effect Jordan had on basketball and society. He, along with Bird, Magic, and others, made the NBA what it is today. The first Air Jordans, changed the shoe industry forever, and is the reason why every NBA player now has their own shoe. Also, many of the great players of today grew up idolizing Jordan, and tried to adapt their games and styles to him.
Putting up numbers is one thing, but altering a culture is a completely different thing that Kobe will NEVER do.

I watched Jordan. I also watched Magic, Bird, 'Nique, Wilt, Bill, JoJo, Gail and Jerry. Do I qualify?
Kobe's got some game, but he can't even carry Jordan's shoes. He doesn't shoot as high a percentage from the field, he doesn't have as many assists or rebounds, and most importantly he doesn't make his teammates better. While Jordan wasn't the best at making his teammates better (that was Bird, hands down) he learned how to do this before his 10th season in the NBA. Kobe still has that lesson to learn.

He could be considered better only if he wins more titles than MJ. But I can say that if you compare the two in terms of how good they were at the same age then Kobe may have the edge...but people don't want to consider that? What did so much damage to Kobe's rep and clouded peoples view of him now and once he retires will always be the rape trial and the rift causing Shaq to be traded. Kobe has been branded a mal-content, some of which was earned. But I can say if anybody surpasses MJ it will be Kobe. We must wait until his career is over... and I say he will be considered better when it is all said and done. I can be honest can the rest of you?

There isn't a thriving chance that he'll ever compare to or surpass Jordan in any way.
You make a great point about age. People who weren't even born and/or were too young to remember the Jordan years are likely to be the nonsensical kids who say Bryant is better.

Jordan is the first-class participant of all time, he now not most effective used to be a fine scorer he mounted his different teammates for open photographs to upgrade the elements scored in video games; kobe however is a ball-hog and lebron? He hasn't even been round lengthy adequate to rank with kobe and jordan.

Kobe might just be as good of a basketball player as MJ. Not a good person though, that is why the comparisons are shot down. When Kobe had another All-Star on his team he won 3 rings. MJ didn't win a ring until Pippen. Give Kobe his Pippin and he will win. Think about Kobe and Marion together.
