modems come in all types and the windows driver cache, which is the part of the windows operating system that is responsible for storing all the most popular drivers, dosent allways recognize evry driver
this can be for many reasons, but its more than likely that your modem is a old or rare modem that is not recognized by windows
when using a ethernet connection no drivers are needed, however the ethernet network card needs drivers but these should be installed by windows
a usb connection is different, this connection needs drivers and these can be found on the disk that came with your broadabnd modem or online at the manufacturers website
personally i would use a ethernet connection as all you need to do is plug your ethernet cable into the network card and the connection will be there, this is also the fastest at 100mbps,were as usb only runs at 12mbps
ethernet cables are also known as rj-45 cables and network patch cables, and come in lengths from 1 metre to 50 metres, this is so users can network ther p.c,s around their homes such as in the bedroom and office
there are also dial up modems, there are normally known as 56k data fax modem, but are rarely use these days since the rise in broadband
good luck!
