If you are purchasing your driftwood from a pet shop, then all you need to do is wash it off a bit before you place it in the tank.
Driftwood offers a small amount of water softening and pH lower effects for a freshwater tank. It's impact is slow and gentle and safe for the fish but won't impact the hardness or pH very much either. If your fish prefer softer more acidic water it surely won't hurt a thing.

water does leach stuff out of wood, so you have to be careful on what type of wood you add to your tank. chances are, if its sold at a good pet store,it will not harm your fish or tank. if the wood has tannins in it, it may lower the pH and color the water. If you buy the petstore driftwood, rinse it off really good before you put it into your tank.

Typically, driftwood serves only aesthetic purposes, however, some fish do need wood as a part of their diet (some types of plecos). If you buy driftwood from the petstore, it is probably free of bacteria, or parasites, but may still leach tannins into the water. This will discolor the water, turning it into an amber-yellow color, but will not change the chemistry of the water nor harm your fish. After a couple of weeks, and steady water changes, the color will eventually begin to fade, and the water will return to its normal color.

i dont know what you mean by balance out the tank, but they dont serve any purpose other than a decoration and maybe a hiding spot. if you find the driftwood yourself you need to boil it a while to make sure you kill anything living in it, the ones at the pet store can just be washed and put in your tank

hi i brought bogwood for my fish tank, as my pleco likes to graze on it and its good for their diet, if you want to put it in your tank boil it first for twenty minutes and let it cool in the water, then just put it were you want in the tank, boiling it and cooling it makes it easier to stay at the bottom, fish of all sorts will love it, xxxx
