The "I" in i-pod is to keep with the whole "I" mac series. The reason for this is that when the I-Mac first came out, its tower and visual appeal was very appealing to the "eye". Rather than use "eye-mac", they went with a more memorable marketing strategy, and called it the I-Mac. When the I-Pod first came out, this was the same, It was the most visually appealing mp3 player on the market.
