In my opinion mentally ill person is only ill, it is curable as any other disease. " mentally ill " is different from " mentally handicapped ". State of awareness is obviously less in a mentally ill person, compared to normal person. But how much is he aware or unaware ? it has to be decided by the nature of damage happened. Duration and nature of treatment is left the Neurologist.

I feel sad, in some places, if a person visits a psychologist or a Neurologist, they brand him/her as a "mad", they do not even think that the person might have visited only for a "consultation" or may be for a " counseling ".

Status of brain will be same in an " ill " person as a normal persons one. Some group of nerve cells might have damaged. Blood might have clotted it a certain region, or may be a tumor.
