Trust is a relationship you build with another person. It is not based on the character or goodness of the trust-receiver, it is based on what the trust-giver learns about the trust-receiver over time.

Think of it like a token system. If you do something trustworthy, you earn a token, and the trust-giver puts it in their "trust bank." You can't earn a "trust bank" full of tokens in a short time, you have to build it. The longer you are putting tokens in, the bigger the trust-giver's "trust bank" grows, and how much the trust-giver trusts you equals how much you've put in the "trust bank".

It "scorches my soul" how people seem to think that if they are a good person, they should automatically be trusted. "If you love someone, you should just trust them." Bull huckey. Trust is earned, it is not a God given right. Saying that you should just be trusted because your a good person is like saying you should just be wealthy, whether you've worked for the money or not.

It takes a life-time to work up a good "trust bank." If a couple has been married 30 years, they have 30 years of trust in the bank, If they just got married, the trust bank is rattling, and they need to be working on building up the bank, not expecting to be treated like they already have a 30 year old bank.

Wow. I think I need to go find some "fluff" questions to answer now....

Trust means never having to second guess in my mind that my comrade/friend is doing what needs to be done. That every decision that person made, bad or good, was done with good intentions. That they would never intentionally do something to me, friends or family.
