I think it depends on how you act. Does a sixteen year old act like a kid or an adult? I acted like an adult because I had responsibilities. My little sister acted like a kid because she had no responsibilities.
It backfired when I went through my rebellious stage when I was out of the house and in the Army. It took me 9 years to "grow up"

Of course in most of the US legally an adult is 18 yrs of age.
However, I like what someone already said. Whether a person is really an adult is very hard to define - very subjective. This is especially so as far as maturity - some people can be wise, mature, and have had a life time of (hard) experiences by 10 yrs. While others never become mature adults.
As far as being young while you can. I don't think that you are neccesarily doing something wrong. I think whoever said such to you just suggested that you enjoy where you are at in life. Enjoy the freedoms you have of being younger - value the experiences that you have that are new and special (driving a car for the first time, going on your first date, etc, for example).
Sometimes people in the middle of their lives look back and have lots of regrets. A lot of times they wish they would have had more of a variety of events in their life.
We all are impatient to reach certain achievements in our lives but often we don't enjoy what we have and where we are right now.
I hope this helps - I know that I am writing a very long answer.
Best wishes for you as you go thru the path of your life.

16 is close to an adult but still not quite there, i would still use the word youth for someone as young as 16. 18 would be the age went you become a young adult while at 21 you are a full fledged legal adult... But maturity is all the state of the mind, you can be 16 and have a mindset of someone 30 and vice versa, hope that helps... And please do not care what other think about you, just be yourself, being more matured at a younger age is not a sin...

I'm only 18 and I see the responsibilties that I have now, thinking about car payments, gas, work etc. Yeah everyone has a Sweet Sixteen and that you makes you seem like an adult, but you still have some time before you're an official adult. It's okay to have fun and still be somewhat mature, like go out with your friends, but don't do something stupid that you know you'll later regret. I don't think its a horrible thing that you are being mature, but if you are making your stress level increase, try to relax. Listen to music, read a book, call me nuts but taking a walk and then going to a park and just screaming always has worked for me. You feel like your screaming at the world and that's okay. I hope that whatever you feel works out and that you enjoy your youth!!

when I was 16 I thought I knew a lot about how life works, now that I'm 23 I realize that I don't known a damn thing about life. You can certanly do responsible things at 16 like get a job, buy your own car, do well in school. But a 16 year old is not an adult

16 is not an adult. Although at 16 you are old enough to be responsible for yourself. You are not an adult until at you are atleast 18, because then you can make legal decision of your own and can be tried as an adult in the court of law. However you are not really an adult until you turn 21.

I didn't feel like an adult until I was 21....Enjoy the next couple of years and have fun! Adult life is forever after that! Take advantage of being a teen while you have it because it goes by very quickly!

at 16 you are still a child in the process of become an adult, when 18, your a young man, at 20-25 your mature, 25-30 your frustrated and become immature 30+ your in touch with your inner child because you took it for granted :))

Your not an adult and be thankful for that.
You're an adult way longer than you are a teen, enjoy the fact that you dont have to worry about bills, working, health, kids, insurance, taxes, all the things that make you an adult.
