I write Sci-fi novels, and I'm looking for ideas. How might animals today evolve millions of years in the future? I would like suggestions that are interesting and thought provoking

I remember reading a book many years ago called "After Man: a zoology of the future" by Dougal Dixon. It was full of the kind of ideas your looking for. I can't remember the details off hand now, but it might be worth getting hold of a copy and having a look. I doubt whether you would be able to use his ideas directly due to copyright, but it would probably be a good way to stimulate your imagination.

There was also a BBC TV series not so long ago called "The future is Wild" which might help as well. Here is a link to the website for that.

Apparently DVDs of the series are available on Amazon (link for that below as well).

Evolution is the response to a challenge posed by the environment. So you would want to look at what threat animals face and what changes would be needed to survive them.

So you may be looking at the spread of humanity into their habitats so how would these animals adapt to deal, camoflage for an urban environment, abilities to prey upon humans, etc.

So you may want to look in those directions

As humans become more 'cybernetic', insects and small rodents will evolve into huge creatures that live on metal and wires, rather than flesh and blood.
