The thermostats in cars are fairly simple mechanisms. An expanding capsue pushes up against a spring. As temp increases the capsule expands pushing the valve off its seat against the spring. When it cools the spring reseats it. Failure usually means it closes, but not always. Easy to check a manual thermostat, remove it, shove it in saucepan of hot water and see if it opens.
Lots of modern cars have thermostats controlled by the engine's computer, or fuel computer, and if these fail it can be due to a computer malfunction which requires a diagnostic test. See a garage if this is the case.

If it particularly is caught closed the return side would be chilly (right hose in maximum radiators). in case you're removing the thermostat, you are able to placed it in a pan and boil it. it is going to open while the water starts to boil and then close while the water cools.

Like most moving parts they only last so long. Have you ever had an engine flush ? Maybe its full of crud. The thermo. isn't a hard part to replace.Just get the proper heat range and its a snap . The new one goes in just like the old one came out.

The thermostat could be sticking due to age or lack spring left in the wax / spring. It doesn't cause REAL problems, but makes your engine run at an INEFFICIENT temperature. (If it's stuck closed, the engine willrun hot and Visa Versa) so it's best to get it changed as soon as poss!

For a $15 part and a 1/2 hour labor, why don't you replace it?

You could have a bit of grease or gunk on the contacts give it a bit of a clean, if that does not work more than likely broken
