Ok thursday night a 28 year old horse went down for 13 hours. His owner came and the next morning was ready to put him down with his condition. But he got up! He was than taken to UGA where he seemed to be getting better but he collapesed and could not even stand in a sling Sunday night. He was euthinized Monday morning. What happened the vets will perform an autopsy but I just wonder what happened?

He was dragging his hind legs when he moved.

Sounds like a type of stroke to me, especially because he is old. We had a 32 yr old go down with a stroke for up to 5 hrs (one feeding time until my aunt got back out there) and after pushing on him a bit, he got back up, a day later, he had another stroke and went down. We barely got him back up, and euthanized him the next day.

EPM usually does not hit that suddenly. First you are going to see a wobbly weak backend and it will slowly (or within a week) progress to more wobbly with trouble standing (walks drunkenly) and you start seeing brain damage (only turns one way, bug eyes, grinding teeth, idly swinging head back and forth with no purpose).

Those symptoms are not enough to diagnose a horse with anything. He was 28, his systems could have been failing. It may have just been his time to go.

Wait for the necropsy results, then do your research.
