For the other users, who have answered this question. Please be aware about the fact that, Mahatma Gandhi was in South Africa & the incident during his train journey, made his life change forever. This was instrumental for his further pursuit of ahimsa and struggle for independance.

Persistence, plain and simple. The dude just did not give up, ever. Every time someone would knock him down he would just get up and do it again. And as he kept doing it, more people kept following him.

For those who did not know of Gandhi's time in South Africa, I am really shocked. Go rent the movie "Gandhi" at least, even if you don't want to read a book (and shame on you if you don't).

I thought Gandhi was only in India. When did he go to South Africa? That guy really got around!
