Check that they indeed are defunct and then contact the bank to put a stop on the pre-authorized payments. If they are operating elsewhere and you weren't made aware of it...they'll let you know pretty quickly that they are still around. At that point I'd have a tendency to question their business practices and if you don't have to do authorized payments to them (not a utility you need etc), I'd not. If you don't have to pay them because you are bound to them for a service or product they provide(d) then decide whether or not you still wish to do business with them.

Things like that has happened to me before and the bank wasn't much help, i was told i would need to fill out some sort of forms and it was going to take time lol. It can be fustrating. So what i did was i withdrew all my money from the account put a freeze on it and opened another one with the bank the same day. Tell them you want to put a freeze on it but take your money out first ok. Or you can just cancel the account.

contact your bank and stop the payment and you might want to report it to the better business bureau and/or the federal trade comission
